ABI in the Streets is a new Traverse Independence initiative where we try to reach people who are homeless or precariously housed and who may have an acquired brain injury (ABI). We team up with mental health and addictions services to reach this population. Yesterday and today, Traverse staff were stationed at the drop-in centre at 150 Main St. in Cambridge to do a "screening blitz" to determine if someone has an ABI. The results have been overwhelming and have proved that our hunch was right: a very high percentage of homeless and precariously housed people have suffered from an ABI and would benefit enormously from our services. This is just a first step in the process of providing assistance to this population.
